Christmas Advent Devotional Introduction

This Christmas at Encounter, we are diligently and purposefully preparing our hearts and minds to pursue Jesus, who just over two thousand years ago came as our Messiah, our Savior, our King.

The weeks leading up to Christmas are called Advent which means “coming”.   In the same way that John the Baptist came to tell Israel to repent of their sins because a Savior was coming, Advent will build our anticipation for the Christmas story. All of Israel knew the prophecies and were awaiting the coming Messiah, but only those who were “Pursuing the King” found him.   They knew that everything they had been longing and looking for was found in Jesus.   It changed their lives so much so that they began loving him and living for him as well.

Here are four weekly devotions for you to do with your family.  Set aside time together each week to read the Christmas story together and adore Jesus.  Jeremiah 23:29 “Isn’t my Word like fire,’ says the Lord”.  As a family, gather around the fire and feel its warmth.  Hold up your Bible, God’s Word and picture it as fire.  See it sparkling with colors of grace. It is light for dark nights. It is healing for hurt hearts. It is the story of reconciliation between God and us.

Week 1: Longing for Jesus

Recall a Christmas when you were really excited to open up presents, but you had to wait until the right time to open them. Remember that feeling of anticipation and excitement? Remember counting down the minutes? Remember getting the gift in your hand and finally being allowed to open it?

Read Romans 5:5-11 together as a family.

We receive reconciliation through God through Jesus Christ. Over the past few months, Encounter Church has been going through the book of Romans on Sunday mornings. Romans 5:5 speaks of knowing God to its fullest experience when the love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Not only did God pursue our reconciliation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and not only did God enable us to receive reconciliation through Jesus Christ, but also we exalt and rejoice in God through Jesus Christ.  Jesus enabled us to receive reconciliation and gave us the perfect gift.

Read Luke 2:22-38.   What were Simon and Anna longing for?  What did Jesus fulfill for them?

What are you longing for?  How does longing for Jesus change every other area of our life.

Long for Jesus this Christmas. Receive the reconciliation that he purchased for you. Don’t leave that gift under the tree unopened. Open it and enjoy it.

Week 2: Looking for Jesus

Think of what your family does to prepare for Christmas. Does the tree go up? What about decorations? Is there a favorite recipe that comes out this time of year?  How do you prepare for Christmas each year?

Looking means to see something with an intention.  It means to pay attention to what you see.

The story of the Magi takes us back all the way to the Old Testament when Israel was exiled to Persia and Daniel became the third ruler and head of the religious leaders in Persia.  (see Daniel 5:29).   Six hundred years before the Messiah came, the Persian religious leaders were looking to the stars for the arrival of the Messiah.   When the star appeared, the Magi went in pursuit of their King.  The gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh were also prophetic, speaking of our Lord's offices of king, priest, and savior.  Gold speaks of His kingship; frankincense was a spice used in the priestly duties; and myrrh was an embalming ointment anticipating His death.

God placed a giant star in the sky to guide people to Bethlehem to worship Jesus. God desires for people to pursue him, and it always requires us to look to his Son.  That is his design. He did it then and is still doing it now.

Read about the wise men and how they pursued the king together as a family….Matthew 2:2-11.

How can we look to Jesus and pursue the king in our everyday lives?

Week 3: Loving Jesus

What is the best gift you’ve ever received? Who gave it to you? Why was it the best?

Read Luke 1:26-38, 46-55.

It had been 400 years of silence for Israel. No prophets, no kings.  Likely Israel was asking “where is God?”  But the faithful continued to live righteously awaiting the fulfillment of the promised Messiah.  In Luke 1, the longing for the Messiah was over.  The righteous prayers were answered.  It probably looked different than Mary expected, but she immediately humbled herself to the work of the Holy Spirit in her life.  She believed and obeyed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her.  She magnified the Lord.  She knew firsthand what it meant to love Jesus and how loving Jesus changes our whole world.

How has loving Jesus changed your life?  What should our lives look like as a result of this?

Week 4: Living for Jesus

Talk about a time when you felt really happy after giving someone a present. What was that present and why did you feel so happy?

Read the Christmas story found in Luke 2:1-20 together as a family.

Jesus birth was the greatest gift to us.  He came so we can have a Savior.   He came to give glory to God and to teach us how to do the same.  Here are three specific gifts for you to receive and live for Jesus.

  1. You are already forgiven.
    • Have you ever tried to do something in your own strength and failed?   You probably immediately think about New Years resolutions. Many of us think about changes in the New Year because we have fallen into bad habits and want a way out. We want some new patterns of eating, giving, relating to our spouse, family devotions, sleep and exercise.  We feel like if we stop doing the wrong thing and start doing the right things, everything will be better, but often we are trying to fix external issues to internal problems.  What we are really longing for is to be acceptable, to be worthy.  Romans 5:8 tells us that “God shows his great love for us in that while were still sinners Christ died for us.”  What that means is that Christ did what we could not do for ourselves.  Receive God’s free gift of salvation and his forgiveness of sins.
    • Here is the first gift: Here is the first gift: Christ came to save us by destroying the works of the devil, our sin, and to be our advocate.  The work is already done; you just have to receive it.
  2. Your life has purpose.
    • “This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.” These two things are so closely connected for the apostle John that he calls them one commandment: believe Jesus and love others. That is your purpose. That is the sum of the Christian life.   Trust Jesus, love people.
    • Here is the second gift: a purpose to live.
  3. You have a helper.
    • John 14:26 tells us that we are not in this alone.  “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”  “He who is in you is greater than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4) God is for us, not against us. He will help you. His Spirit produces in us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control.  Trust him.
    • Here is the third gift: He will always be with you.

At the beginning of Matthew, people wanted to “come” and “see” Jesus. By the end of Matthew, we are called to “go” and “tell” people about Jesus.  How has pursuing Jesus this Christmas changed you? How will you continue in your pursuit of the King and tell others about it?

Good News of Great Joy Devotional

This Christmas Season we want to pursue the king...his name is Jesus.

Below is the preface taking from the Good News of Great Joy: Daily Readings for Advent by John Piper.

---

Advent is for adoring Jesus. At least that’s our angle on it at Desiring God. Advent is an annual season of patiently waiting, hopeful expectation, soul-searching, and calendar-watching marked by many churches, Christian families, and individual followers of Jesus. There’s no biblical mandate to observe Advent. It’s an optional thing—a tradition that developed over the course of the church’s history as a time of preparation for Christmas Day. Many of us find observing Advent to be personally enjoyable and spiritually profitable. The English word “Advent” is from the Latin advent us, which means “coming.” The advent primarily in view each December is the first coming of Jesus two millennia ago. But Jesus’s second coming gets drawn in as well.

Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends Christmas Eve. This means the earliest it begins, depending on where that Sunday falls, is November 27, and the latest it starts is December 3. Whereas Lent (the season of preparation for Easter) is 40 days, Advent ranges in length from 22 to 29 days. Christians throughout the world have their different ways of celebrating Advent. Some light candles. Some sing songs. Some eat candies. Some give gifts. Some hang wreaths. Many of us do all of the above.

Christians have developed many good ways of extending the celebration of Jesus’s coming beyond merely the short 24 hours of December 25. The incarnation of the Son of God, “for us and for our salvation,” as the old creed says it, is too big a thing to appreciate in just one day. Indeed, it’s something the Christian will celebrate for all eternity. Our prayer is that this little devotional might help you keep Jesus as the center and greatest treasure of your Advent season. The candles and candies have their place, but we want to make sure that in all the December rush and hubbub we adore Jesus above all. So, “O Come, Let Us Adore Him” is perhaps the theme song of these Advent readings. These meditations are all about adoring Christ, the Lord. In spots, you’ll hear strands of “O Come, O Come, Immanuel,” and in others, “Hark! Te Heralds Angels Sing.” And, of course, we’ll have a cameo from the magi. But the figure at the center is Jesus—the baby born in Bethlehem, the God-man in swaddling clothes, laid in a manger, destined for Calvary, sent by his Father to die and rise again for his people.
